Every year on October 31, children from all over your neighborhood come and knock on your door dressed up in all sorts of costumes. They come knocking to collect candy from you and then skip away to the next house and the next basket of candy. This has become a tradition on Halloween. The only day when it is acceptable to dress as a bum or act like a baby. It is also the only day when it is acceptable to try and scare each other with monsters and spiders. As you walk down the street around Halloween, you will more than likely notice all sorts of strange and spooky things on your neighbors’ houses and in their yards. Halloween decorations have also become a tradition on this holiday. Every year, more and more people try to turn their houses and yards into the scariest places anyone has ever seen.

But where do these people get their Halloween ideas?

Here are a few Halloween decorating ideas to help you impress your neighbors and keep the kids amused.

TRADITIONAL

This idea is based on the traditional things that remind everyone of Halloween. Start with a few blocks of hay stacked in front of your house or on your porch. Place a scarecrow on top and a few pumpkins around and on top of the blocks of hay. Next, put a black cat somewhere near the stacks and a mouse or two. The ideal place for this structure is somewhere near the front door or the path to the front door so everyone can see it.

SCARY

This idea is designed to scare anyone and everyone who looks at it. The more creative you are, the scarier it can be. (not a good idea for those with young children!) You can use your entire yard for this idea. Start by spreading webs (cotton) over various bushes and from doorway. Then place plastic spiders in the webs. Use rubber body parts to scare everyone by partially burying them in the ground. Make tombstones and place them around the yard along with a few coffins. You can stuff a few “bodies,” put masks on them and have them around the porch and yard also. Put one or two in a coffin. Skeletons, witches and ghosts are also a good, scary idea also.

SUPERSTITIOUS

This unusual idea involves the theory of bad luck. Some people believe that by doing certain things, they will receive bad luck. For instance, do not walk under a ladder. It is supposed to bring bad luck. Set up your house so that anyone who goes up to it will have to pass by these superstitious beliefs.

Place a black cat somewhere in the walkway.

Hang up a large calendar with Friday the 13th highlighted.

Make something that resembles a large broken mirror and put it somewhere near the walkway or hang it near the door.

For a party: To decorate for a Halloween party, you can use all of the things mentioned plus add a giant spider for the ceiling centerpiece, black lights and a fog machine if available.
